Tin Shoong was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1934, the year of the Dog.
As a boy he enjoyed swimming in the rushing waters of his father's village in White Sands, Guangdong province in
China.
In Malaysia, he received a B.A. from Nanyang University, but not before braving
Japanese occupation during WWII as well as imprisonment as a political prisoner for purchasing what the British
colonial rulers deemed as the wrong books. During his detention he suffered permanent hearing loss from a guard's
blow to his ear.
He moved to Canada to earn his Masters degree at UNB and he spent much
of his working life as a high school English teacher, but he also enjoyed dabbling in business and law.
He was a founding member and past president of the Canada-China Friendship Society and had personally met many of Canada's
past prime ministers. Tin was active in the Nantah alumni and was also a strong supporter and promoter of
Hakka traditions and culture.
Some of his hobbies included badminton, fishing, travelling, reading and writing.
Probably one of his greatest life accomplishments was working hard to raise
himself from an impoverished life in China and Malaysia to a fruitful and comfortable one in Canada where he could
raise and fully educate four strong children and give them opportunities he never had. He had many aspirations
and dreams in life that he willingly sacrificed for the sake of his family.
After surviving two major aneurysms, we were
blessed with an additional 15 years of his presence within which he was able to interact with the next generation
of the Yap family. He will be sorely missed.
